NLB Book Bugs Programme 2026 – The Secret of the Shards

The National Library Board's Book Bugs is back for 2026 with a new edition, 'The Secret of the Shards' — running 1 August to 30 November 2026 at all public libraries island-wide. It is free, aimed at children aged 4 to 12, and built around a simple idea: borrow and read library books, earn points, and redeem collectible Book Bugs trading cards. How to play 1. Borrow physical books with your child's own myLibrary account (sign up free at any library or on the NLB Mobile app). 2. Borrowing earns Book Bugs points, and completing the accompanying quizzes earns more. 3. Redeem points in the NLB Mobile app: choose the number of card packs, receive a QR code and 8-digit PIN, then collect the cards from a Book Bugs dispenser at selected libraries. The card list The Secret of the Shards edition features a new series of collectible character cards — the full card checklist and dispenser locations are published on NLB's official Book Bugs page (nlb.gov.sg, under Discovereads), so you can track which cards your child is still missing. Tips for parents Each child needs their own library card — points accrue per account, so siblings should borrow on their own cards. Card stocks at popular dispensers run out; redeem early in the season rather than saving points for the final weeks. The programme is a genuinely effective reading motivator — pair library trips with a card redemption to keep the habit going all season.

Singapore's most spectacular Mid-Autumn celebration returns to Gardens by the Bay from 12 to 27 September 2026, with the gardens glowing nightly from 6pm to 10pm. Admission to the outdoor lantern displays is free. What to see Seven themed lantern installations light up the gardens this year, following the story of Fenbao and her friends — spread across the Golden Garden, Supertree Grove, Bayfront Plaza and Dragonfly Lake, and capped by the Colonnade of Lights with 1,000 hand-painted lanterns. The Supertrees join in with specially choreographed Mid-Autumn light shows. Beyond the lanterns The festival Marketplace serves street food and drinks alongside carnival games and family rides (charges apply for games and rides). A craft corner runs on selected dates (fees apply). The finale weekend goes out big: the Singapore Big Flag Championship runs 1pm to 7.30pm on 27 September, followed by a Dragon Dance at 7.30pm. Tips for families Getting there: Bayfront MRT (CE1/DT16), Exit B — follow the underground linkway to the gardens. The outdoor paths are stroller-friendly. Best time to go: arrive just before 6pm on a weekday for the lantern light-up with the smallest crowds; weekends closer to Mid-Autumn Day (25 September) are the busiest. Bring the kids' own lanterns for the lantern walk — battery-operated ones are easiest for little hands. It is an outdoor event: pack water, insect repellent and a portable fan for the early-evening heat. Quick answers Is it free?
